Every system that generates output from retrieved information will sometimes get it wrong. The language model will hallucinate. The retrieval system will surface irrelevant context. The fusion layer will weight the wrong source. These are not bugs. They are properties of probabilistic systems.
The question is not whether Tessera will make errors. The question is whether it will catch them before I act on them. That is the verification layer’s job.
Three Verification Passes
Verification runs after the language model generates its response but before that response is presented to me. It operates in three passes.
Source Verification. Every claim in the generated response is traced back to a source artifact. If the response says “you decided to use Approach X for Client Y in March 2023,” the verifier checks whether that decision actually exists in the graph. If it does not, the claim is flagged or removed.
Consistency Verification. The response is checked against the active context windows for contradictions. If the response recommends an approach that I explicitly rejected in a prior decision, the verifier flags the contradiction and presents both the recommendation and the prior rejection so I can make an informed choice.
Completeness Verification. For Action Planning queries, the verifier checks whether all components of the request were addressed. If I asked for a remediation plan and the response covers diagnosis and resolution but not stakeholder communication, the verifier identifies the gap and either triggers additional retrieval or flags the incompleteness.
Why This Matters for Remediation
In a technical remediation scenario, acting on wrong information is worse than having no information. If Tessera tells me that a client’s environment runs on VMware when it actually runs on Hyper-V, the remediation plan based on that error could make things worse. The verification layer exists to prevent exactly this kind of failure.
Source verification is particularly critical. Language models are confident liars. They will state fabricated facts with the same tone as verified ones. The only defense is systematic verification against ground truth, and for Tessera, ground truth is the corpus.
The cost of verification is latency. Three verification passes add about one to two seconds to response time. For simple queries, that is noticeable. For Action Planning queries that take ten to fifteen seconds anyway, it is negligible. I consider it a reasonable trade: slower responses that I can trust versus faster responses that I must independently verify.
The Trust Calibration
Each verified response includes a confidence indicator. High confidence means all claims are source-verified and consistent. Medium confidence means most claims are verified but some rely on inference. Low confidence means significant portions of the response could not be verified against the corpus.
I use the confidence indicator to calibrate my own trust. High confidence responses I can act on directly. Medium confidence responses I scan for the unverified portions. Low confidence responses I treat as starting points for my own investigation, not as answers.
This is the honest relationship I want with the system. Not blind trust. Not constant skepticism. Calibrated trust based on evidence. Tessera tells me how much it knows and how sure it is, and I decide how much weight to give it. That is the architecture of a trustworthy assistant.
